The traditional average is not a satisfactory measure of batting performance if a batsman has many not-out scores. The purpose of this paper is, firstly, to define an estimator that will always give a reliable estimate of the average, even in the case of a batsman having a large percentage of not-out scores, and secondly also a comprehensive measure of batting performance for a short series, e.g. a test or ODI series. Strong arguments are given why the traditional average should not be used in the case of high proportions of not-out scores.
